Leaving ir blank is also not an option.
Why is it not an option?
From what I can tell from here, your best bet is to have two fields, one that is text with "N/A" entered if you leave the other date field empty.
Your validation system can require that one of the two fields be not empty.
Thank you for your suggestion, but the layout (for a mobile device) is not conducive to another field.
So, is it fair to state that there is no workaround to enter "NA" or other text into a date field formatted as Date short of reformatting the field as Text?
You cannot enter text into a date field. But I also devise FM GO layouts for iPhones so I understand your concern about adding another field. But this should be possible even on such a layout.
You can, for example, place both fields in a stack with the upper field transparent. Then place a transparent popover button on top of the field. When you tap the popover button, the popover panel can display both the date field and a button or a check box formatted field with "N/A" as the text that can be entered by tapping the button or check box. The same tap can close the popover. With the popover closed, you'll see either a date or "N/A" in that stack of two fields on top of each other.
And for entering dates on an iOS device, you might want to use the Date Picker in this demo file instead of the standard "spinning wheels" date picker that comes with the iOS: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78737945/DatePickerPopoverDemo.fmp12
Thanks for the technique and the link, but the file is coded in FMP 13, and I'm usiing FMP 12.
Is there a version that works in FMP12?
You need FMP 13 in order to use popovers and sliders. The Date Picker users a Slider located inside a popover so that you get a calendar format date picker that you can swipe horizontally to move forward and back one month at a time.
And it doesn't use any tables, fields, relationships, etc to do so it's pretty easy to copy from the demo to your own files.
But you have to have Filemaker 13 to do that.
(But the demo will open in FM GO if you want to see what it can do...)
OK, Thanks for the help. I plan to upgrade soon.
