Newbie: How to specify the contents of a Global Field
I understand how to create a Global Field and how to name it. How in the heck do I specify the actual content? --Thanks
In Layout Mode, that is the appropriate behavior. You would need to make the change in Browse mode (aka - Data Entry Mode).
In Layout Mode, select the field.
Go to Format > Field Control > Behavior
Temporarily set the field to be editable in Browse mode.
Enter Browse mode.
Make the change.
Enter Layout Mode.
Select the field.
Make the field uneditable again.
Keeping in mind the advice that was given earlier about hosted files. If you have a hosted file, another alternative is to include in your opening script several "Set Field" commands to set the globals where you want them.
Just plonk it on a layout and type in it.
Yeah what Alan said with this one caveat:
If the solution is hosted (e.g. by FileMaker Server) and you are a guest (even with Full Access), any entries into a global field will stick for you in your session only. Other guests can have their own value in the global field and even yours will disappear when you close the database.
If you want to reset the original value of the global field, you need to take the hosted database offline, open it up as a single user and set the value. Close it, rehost it, and your value set will be the default value all new guests get.
