Go to Field [select/play]
A note of caution--especially for Database versions 12 and newer.
This method (double click or go to field) works only as long as you stick to very specific limitations. Any of the following will keep this from working:
1) The file was not inserted with the Insert File option (the other options in the Insert menu or their equivalent script steps won't let this work.)
2) "Store a reference" was not selected when the file was inserted.
3) External storage was specified for the container field
4) The field on the current layout is "optimized for interactive content".
If you can work within all of those limitations, this is great way to open the file with the "default application" specified in your operating system for that file type. If you can't work within them, you'll have to use export field contents instead and yes, this can complicate certain tasks that you might do with a file you want to open in this fashion.
I'm sorry for the delay on thanking you for all. Actually, I have the field without external storage, and when a file is dropped on the field a script saves it as a external reference. So, is just drop the file and it's ready to go.
Also, I think the 4th limitation can be overcome with making two instances of the same field in the layout, and gotoObject to the instance without optimization for interactive content. If impossible, a short new layout to just do the same. It's not quite easy, but I think it could work.

That will work.
Hi H1$c and PhilModJunk,
I've been reading this thread and would also like to be able to open the items in container field without having to store a copy of the doc in the database. Is there a script that needs to run in order to do that? I'm new to FileMaker, and have been reading the userguides and following the training series.
Naulabean, I've made an example file. I don't know how long it will be available (I always change my dropbox settings) but, for now, here it is
Thank you so much for your help. I am sorry, but I work in a locked down environment (a bank) and we are unable to download items from the Internet. Is there any way you would be willing to post the script you used, in this forum?

Surely you could download the file at a time when you are not at work?
no big deal, PhilModJunk. Maybe it's all the internet he has access to.
