opening documents created in an older version

I need to open a FileMaker Pro 7 database with my new Pro 10 version.  When I try "Open With" it gives the error message "This FileMaker Pro Release 4.1 "FILENAME.fp7" was created by version Pro 7.0 of FileMaker and cannot be opened by this version."  I spoke with a customer support agent and she suggested that if I disable the opening scripts I could be able to open this document.  How would I do that?  Is that really necessary?  The document was transferred to my PC from my old Mac and at the time it was transferred I didn't have FileMaker on the PC and I suspect that might be the source of this issue.
