Title

Organizing a Sales Report

Post

Hello,

I'm using Filemaker Pro 10 on Mac OS X. I'm very new to databases in general, and I'm switching to Filemaker Pro after some frustrations with how slow and unwieldy Excel is on a Mac when dealing with extremely large files.

The task I need to accomplish is as follows:

I download a sales report that's organized with each sale as a separate line. So, for example:

Product ID Author Title Date of Sale
AA_ABCD_1234567 Ernest Hemingway The Old Man and the Sea 2/3/10
AA_ABCD_1234567 Ernest Hemingway The Old Man and the Sea 2/3/10
AA_ABCD_2345678 F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby 2/1/10
AA_ABCD_3456789 Augusten Burroughs Running With Scissors 1/23/10
AA_ABCD_1234567 Ernest Hemingway The Old Man and the Sea 2/3/10
AA_ABCD_2345678 F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby 2/1/10

Ideally the report would only show one instance of Old Man and the Sea, but it would have a field that shows quantity, like this:

Product ID Author Title Date of Sale Quantity
AA_ABCD_1234567 Ernest Hemingway The Old Man and the Sea 2/3/10  3
AA_ABCD_2345678 F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby 2/1/10 2
AA_ABCD_3456789 Augusten Burroughs Running With Scissors 1/23/10 1

I have to imagine this is fairly easy, but I guess I'm still thinking in Excel terms. I've searched through the forums and I've found posts referring to the count function, but I can't make it work. Does anyone have any guidance? Thanks in advance for your help.
