About planning a databaseA well-designed database promotes consistent data entry and retrieval, and reduces the existence of duplicate data among the database tables. Relational database tables work together to ensure that the correct data is available when you need it. It’s a good idea to plan a database on paper first.Follow these general steps to plan a database:

Filemaker released a FMP runtime database in 2007 for students called "Campus Productivity Kit" and is available online, notably at CNet

You can search specific Filemaker sites on this Custom Google Search
Try putting the related field servcat::category on the layout and run your script again.
Thank you for all these references they will certainly come handy.
But I still need an answer for my question because what I am trying to do used to work in other packages I worked with before I started using filemaker ( like visual foxpro or SQL) but I cannot get it to work in filemaker so all I need to know is this:
Is the perform find limited to the current table only, and if not why would my example be not working.
Did you try my suggestion?
I just saw your answer now. I will try it and let you know, thank you.
I tried it and it works thank you.
My conclusion from that, and correct me if I am wrong, is that the fact that the table is related does not mean that the related fields are visible to the find function. And that placing the field on the layout makes it visible to the find function.
if you create a 'Find' by specifying search criteria in a 'Find' script step, then it is like doing it manually - the search fields have to be on the layout. I believe that Constrain Found Set has the same limitation.
If you use the 'Set Field' script step to set the search criteria the fields do not need to be on the layout.
Thank you for this information.
