Phone Masking and Storage

In other databases I've used, I was allowed to have a numeric field value stored without formatting, but displayed with formatting. For instance, I could have a phone number display as 123-456-7890 in the layout, but stored as 1234567890 in the data file.

It seems to me that with FMP, I am limited to storing the value as text, with its masking in place (123-456-7890). At least that's what I'm currently doing by making the field a text field, and using a field calculation to insert the hyphens.
