Have you checked out the Import Records | Folder tool for importing all picture files in a given folder into a table in your database? That might give you a good starting point for this.
You can also just click in the container field and choose Insert Picture. (or write a sript that does the same.)
There's a store by reference option that stores a file path to the picture instead of the actual file--which will keep your file size from ballooning. Just keep in mind that all users of yoru database must mount/map to this shared directory in exactly the same way or they won't be able to see the images.
What I was hoping for was to not actually load the photo in the database, but rather disply the photo relative to the part number.

Not at all. I'm thinking the same thing and described two ways (in general terms) to do that. Feel free to describe where you hit a "glitch" in either process.
Store by reference does not actually load the file, just stores a link to the file so that FileMaker can display the picture in the container field.
