That's a great trick, I only wish there was a default feature to do that in FMP, as it seems to be quite a general need, or an mention to that in the instruction manual!
( it's been developing for almost 30 years, should be absolutely stable and complete by now)
PS: The trick has a side effect on the find mode, but that's a reasonable trade off to solve the original problem.
Another unfortunate draw back to drop downs with value lists where the first field value is an ID number is you lose the option to enable auto-complete on the value list. Here's a demo file that illustrates a script based work around so that you can get your ID numbers and auto-complete as well:

Actually PhilModJunk you can type ahead in a dropdown where the first field is an ID and the second field is, for instance, a name.
You click the dropdown and when the list appears you just start typing. The first name (or word) with the letters you type will be selected.
Maybe it's a function they added at some point.
Type ahead, yes--but that's really limited in value IMO. auto-complete, no--as that requires that field 1 be a text field not a number field.
