Hmmm, that's how I have it set up right now, although when I try to create a new record, the field seems to be un-editable. If I go to an already-existing record, I can click on it and see the list, but I can't change it. Any ideas?
You should have one table for employees. They have an ID and a Name etc.
Then a second table. That one should have an EmployeeIdFk field. This should be a number field.
On this number field you set the Dropdown list.
That dropdown list needs to get it's values from the Employee table. The first field is the ID an then you can also display the name in the second field.
Try this first and see if it works.
Then you need to do the trick with the two fields on top of eachother.
But it is super important that the bottom field, the one with the dropdown is set to be available in browse mode. And the employee name that goes on top needs to be unavailable in Browse mode but available in find mode.
This did the trick. I was having issues because the second field I was trying to show was a calculation of concatenated strings and was showing a single question mark. i changed the fields so no it's just one and it works fine. Seems a little weird because on the iPad, when I tap on the field, it pops up with the drop down of names, but shows a number input keyboard (I'm sure for the fk ID). It'll work for now, though. Thanks!
You can use a calculated field that combines multiple values.
But when that field shows up as a question mark it is usually because the calculation field is set to result in a number, and not in a text as it should.
Try changing that and it should work.
Also, if you are using Filemaker 13 you can change the input type on the fk field to show a full keyboard.
