Title

Problem importing numbers accurately from Excel 2008 to FileMaker Pro 11 (Mac)

Post

I am using Excel 2008 and FileMaker Pro 11 for the Mac. As a test, I created a new Excel file, typed in a column: 8, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, 8.6, 8.7. 8.8, 8.9, and 9.0. Doesn't matter if the field is formatted for number or general.

I save the file as an Excel file. Doesn't matter which version of Excel.

I create a new FileMaker database with one field (number) and import the data.

When I check the data during the import and after completing the import (unless I have the decimal setting selected), I see the following values:

8

8.1

8.1999999999999993

8.3000000000000007

8.4

8.5

8.6

8.6999999999999993

8.8000000000000007

8.9

9.0

But, if I export the data from Excel as text it appears correct without the additional decimal places.

No matter what I do, I can't get the actual numbers to import. I don't know if this is Excel or FileMaker that is changing my data, but it is disconcerting. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

When I have the fields formatted for number and export as a text file in FileMaker, regardless of whether I choose to format my output or not, I get the same incorrect numbers on export a text file.

Obviously, I'd like to solve this problem, but if not, what calculation formula would work for fixing the numbers on import?

TIA
