This is indeed a bug with filemaker 11: FMPA 11 Drop-Down List Bug 1
This is one of many bugs you can find listed in the Known Bug List here in the forum.
This list can also be downloaded for free as a filemaker database: http://www.4shared.com/file/8orL8apk/FMP_Bugs.html
Thanks! Any workaround? any news when this bug is going to be repaired? (we are already at v2!)
I've always found the basic "type real fast" value list type ahead much too limiting. I prefer to set up a name based value list where you can use auto-complete instead. The trick is to use that and still keep your relationships based on ID numbers.
There's a link to a tutorial on that technique in the bug thread I posted at the top of my last answer. Here's the link to that tutorial so you don't have to drill down: Tutorial: How to use an auto-complete drop down list when selecting records related by ID number
Unfortunately this won't work for us. We have about 30 databases using the same contacts, with many layouts. We would need to have so many buttons on the contact layout (one for each database) that the Contact layout would be full :-) So many modifications because of 1 bug! Don't know if Filemaker is aware of the problems this bug can cause...
You have one contact table used by 30 other files correct?
I don't see why you'd need 30 different buttons in your Contacts file. You should have one field (that may or may not have a button with it as you can use a script trigger to avoid needing any button) in each layout of your 30 different files that search this contacts file. These buttons should all run the same script but pass a parameter to the script that identifies the file from which the search was initiated so the script can return the located ID number to the correct file.
