Stephen, container fields even when defined as "interactive container" will not allow you directly interact with the content of a text file in the container. However, a pdf file is another matter, see the link. This requires Externally saving the text file as a pdf before importing
Your other option, to ease up on the not copying to another field. Then:
1) Export (use: Export Field Content) the Container file to the “TemporaryPath” folder of Filemaker, with a filename with a “.txt” extension, e.g. “NewName.txt”.
2) Import (use: Import Records) the TemporaryPath folder into a text field.
Then you may do as you need with the content of the text field.
Alternatively, can text be imported from a container into a field to then be looked up?
You have to export from the container, then import the exported text file.

Not directly, containers hold: a Photo, or Audio / Video, or PDF, or any File. But content in a file in a container cannot be interacted with unless it is pdf.
You can use the General Instructions provided earlier in my initial post.

If the text file is ASCII (or any 8bit encoding ?),
Base64Decode ( Base64Encode ( container ) )
get it as text.
