To find all records where a text field contains a word starting with "a"
Click the find button to enter find mode
enter "a" into the text field
perform the find by clicking perform find.
To perform a find in a script, see this thread for some examples:Scripted Find Examples
Hi, thanks for the reply. But when i try that command on the find request , this happens
Search for "an"
I should get all entries that start with "an"
But what i get is, it returns to me all entries with "an" in any part of the field
What i want is just the ones starting with "an"
This also goes for the range operator
e.g. Y-Z , it should return all entries that start with Y & Z, but it returns to me all records that contain either a Y or a Z in any part of the text
Better try that again.
entering just an should not find Panda or Sauan. Only Andre and Anna.
Hi, ive attached an image regarding the issue. (should have done it in the first place) at anyrate, the right hand pictureis the result of typing in "an". Its ordered alphabetically so entries above would be a to S
While it should not be a factor, this is not a recent version of FileMaker.
What could be an issue is that the layout on the left is not the layout shown on the right. What do you see in "Show Records From" in Layout setup in these two layouts?
Also make sure that this field is of type text, not number.
The following screen shots were all taken from the same layout. The first shows all records in the table. The middle image shows find mode with an entered as find criteria and the right hand image shows the two records that were found.
In a few cases, a find can fail due to a messed up field index. If "show Records from" is the same for both layouts, try recovering the file and test the recovered copy (which will have rebuilt indexes) to see if you get correct results.
Does it make alot of difference that the field im searching on is alphanumeric? As some companies have numbers and letters as well . "2Go Aboitiz" I have also tried to search being stationary in one lay out and the result is the same.
It should not, as long as the field is defined as text. What can make a difference is if the name consists of multiple words.
Specifying "A" would find a record with this company name:
Imported Apricots Unlimited
This is actually what I was anticipating to be the trouble that you were having with your finds.
This sometimes requires using a script that searches on a special calculation field that filters out all "word separator" characters from the name field.
