Use a third field defined as Text, with auto-entered calculated value (replacing existing) =
State & "|" & City
Set the field's validation to Unique, Validate always.
Note: this should NOT be your primary key.
Instead of using this as your primary key, create another field with an auto-filled serial number for the key.
Thank you!!! This should work. I had made anything similar in Excel sometime ago.
But I'm wondering how Filemaker ignores the question of primary keys, foreign keys etc. I was doing an overview on all PDF's and help files which came with the application and these questions aren't mentioned. In Access, MySQL and other DBMS of the market you do a primary key with 2, 3 or 4 target fields easily. Why here you need an unusual alternative? (sorry for my poor english)
Because there are no explicit primary and foreign keys in FileMaker.
Thank you for your help. But your solution (serial number) does not work to me. Let's give you the example:
id0001 - Florida - Miami
id0002 - Florida - Tampa
id0003 - Florida - Miami (this would be accepted by the application since it's an unique id, but gives redundancy in my table, understand?)
Hi Mr Vodka,
Ok, but I think it is an amateur approach. I never forgot Chris Gane and Yourdon from school days...
It may be a different approach from what you are used to - but it works. Perhaps you should wait with the tagging until you are sure you understand how it works.
