Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
Mac Basics: Time Machine
Windows has a variety of backup utilities that can be scheduled.
Always exclude your working files from a Time Machine backup. Databases write to files constantly and you don't want backup open files. Instead, set up an OnLastWindowClose script on your file(s) that saves a copy to a different location and allow Time Machine to back up those files. Not bullet proof but a whole lot better than some other schemes.
If you want regular backup copies from a file while it is open when it is NOT hosted from another computer, (Such as during DB development), see this thread for a script that names and saves regular copies of your file: Saving Sequential Back Ups During Development
