In your Layout setup there is an option to save the record changes automatically. If you have this option on, then you will get this when you try and commit the record.
If you are using a script, and want to avoid this message then you can have it commit with no dialog when you specify the Commit Recrd [ ] step.
Thanks Mr Vodka, works fine!
Another question: I have a separate table defined in the database for parameters which I use in scripts for processing. Because the table is not related to other tables I get the message "not related to ...." when I try to retrieve parameter data during a script job. Logical, of course. How do I solve the problem of making parameters stored in an unrelated table available to a script?
Thanks again :-)
You could go to a layout of the separate table, load the paramaters into variables and continue from there.
ok, I tried, but my lack of familiarity with Filemaker scripting is a drawback presently.
In my script I call the layout with the Go to Layout statement. After that I load the layout fields into variables.
But when `i run the script the program doesn't stop at the Layout so I don't get a chance to enter data.
I tried putting a " press to continue" button on the layout and then invoking the script but then the variables don't get loaded.
I guess I don't know how to laod the input data into the variables.
Thanks for the help,
I am not really sure what you're doing (or why), but you could try something like:
Go to Layout [ xyz ]
Pause Script [ Indefinitely ]
# WAIT UNTIL USER ENTERS DATA AND CLICKS 'CONTINUE'
Set Variable [ $x ; ... ]
Set Variable [ $y ; ... ]
thanks ever so much for your tim and knowledge. Yes, I wasn't aware of the Pauze statement.
I'll let yo know if it works .
PS I'm trying to input 2 parameters (Year and Quarter) and then run through a table sequentially and process records depnding on the value of the inputted parameters
Wouldn't it be simpler to enter Find mode, show a custom dialog with the Year and Quarter fields, then perform a find?
Thanks for the tip, yes, that is also an option. The difference is cosmetic: with a layout you can customize the appearance more than with a custom dialog. Your layout suggestion works fine, by the way. Thanks again.
Mr Vodka, next problem :-) Is it possible to create (= add) a new record in a table during a script?
At the end of my script I want to "save" a sum total to a:
1. existing record (question: how do I identify a specific occurence in a table, then update and save (commit)?)
2. non existing record (question: how do I create and save a new record to a table?)
It's probably basic stuff but the documentation supplied with Filemaker is not detailled with respect to scripting.
Thanks again for the leg-up :-)
