Thanks Phill - I was messing round with field set to validate unique and traping an error but couldnt get that to work ... and is valid ONLY seems to care about field entry v file type. - self-joins are ok for a few thousand but beyond that there are speed issues. -

You might try this approach and see if it is faster than "counting" related records:
TO1::DupField = TO2::DupField AND
TO1::PrimaryKey ≠ TO2::PrimaryKey
Then you can use IsEmpty ( TO2::PrimaryKey ) to check for duplicates without counting the number of duplicates.
Ok.... I can see this - I'll try it,
In the mean time I have done a quick join and am NOT doing a calc field to create the count -
I am just comitting the record and then having the script to a temp count in the IF step.
