if you are on a mac... applescript
On Mac, AppleScript. On Windows, MooPlug plug-in (free). Below are 2 AppleScript methods for getting the file list; both return the same thing, a return-separated list of the file names. If you need the entire file path, that would be similar, but different.
This could then be set into a FileMaker field. I would use a global field. You could then use Go To Related Record to go to all of them at once.
-- vanilla AppleScript
setfile_listtolist folderalias "Macintosh HD:Users:fej:Desktop:SSL for Mail:" withoutinvisibles
set text item delimiters to return
set files_txt to file_list as text
on error msg number errnum
display dialog errnum & " " & errmsg
set text item delimiters to ""
-- Unix command line (spaces must be quoted)
setunix_pathtoquoted formofPOSIX pathof "Macintosh HD:Users:fej:Desktop:SSL for Mail:"
do shell script "ls " & unix_path
Thank you so much for replying but i really have no idea what you just said. If you could possibly break it down a little further that would be much appreciated.
OK, I was just saying that a few AppleScript commands (if you're on a Mac) can populate a global field with the file names of a folder. You can then use that field in a relationship to Go To Related Records of matching file names in a field in records.
I don't really know whether you've ever used AppleScript or not. It is not that difficult, though everything is difficult the 1st time. I also don't know what this "folder" is, whether you want to choose it, or whether you already know what and where it is. So my example is going to choose it.
Another big question is whether the file name is enough for a positive match. Or whether you also need the folder name, or the entire file path. All of these are easy to get, but you need to tell us which.
I just entered a few file names that I had manually. You'll have to enter your own, if you want to see any matches. I also don't know how you're getting these file names (or paths) into your file.
(copy the below path and past into another browser window to download the example file)
I know where the folder is on my computer, The file names within that folder match the file names of the records that i want to isolate within my file maker pro database (except in the folder they have .tif).
i could not open the example file
