I remember seeing several threads in this forum on users trying to use Gmail. Many have had problems. I suggest clicking the advanced link above and entering "gmail" and see if those threads will help you out.
If your are sending multiple emails. Are the Addressees static or do they change over time and need a database for management? There are online html email management systems that can produce useful post retrieval information

I have used madmimi and will soon be testing mailchimp.
Here are my current setting in gmail for smtp outgoing server...
Name: leave empty
Email Address: leave empty
Reply-To Address: leave empty
Outgoing SMTP Server: SMTP.gmail.com <------ Notice smtp is capitals, don't know if it is needed, just read somewhere on the forum that this might help!
Server Port: 465
Check in "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)"
Authentication: Plain Password
User Name: firstname.lastname@example.org
These settings seem to work for me about 95% of the time. 95% the email goes and and is received fine! Maybe 50% of the time the email goes out fine and is received fine, but Filemaker tells me "Email(s) could not be sent seccessfully" with an ok button! And lastly, I have 1 person who use AOL that said he NEVER received the emails I sent and I tried 4 times. I think this may be a problem with his end. But, why does Filemaker tell me it could not send the email sometimes, but it goes out fine???
Anyone else have anything to add to this topic???
I just changed the port on the FM server SMTP setup from 587 to 465, and I capitalized SMTP. After doing this, FMS went from about 100% error messages (using the 'Test SMTP Settings' button') to only 50% error messages. The problem here (aside from the obvious) is that even the "successful" test messages were never received by the specified recipient.
I've just had this problem but found that using port 465 sorted the issue.
I tried the comments above because I need my database to default to using Gmail and I get the pop up in the image below. Any way to fix this? Thanks.
