Title

setting the value of related records in a one to many relationship with manual override?

Post

     Hi all,

I'm pretty new to Filemaker. I'm struggling with the following issue: I have two tables, named A and B; table A has the fields A_id and A_description; table B has B_id, A_id, and B_description. The two tables are related through A_ids. Here is an example:

     Table A

     A_id       A_description

     1              xxx

     2              yyy

     3              zzz

     Table B

     B_id       A_id       B_description

     1              1

     2              1

     3              1

     4              2

     5              2

     6              3

Is there a way to make the B_description a calculated field that equals the A_description? In other words, I would like to have:

     B_id       A_id       B_description

     1              1              xxx

     2              1              xxx

     3              1              xxx

     4              2              yyy

     5              2              yyy

     6              3              zzz

I just don't want to insert a ::A_description field in table B, because I would also be able to manually change some B_descriptions, if necessary. In other words, B should equal A by default, unless I modify the data there. Is that even possible?

     Thanks for your help!
