# Show all records from one table in a portal in another table

### Title

Show all records from one table in a portal in another table

### Post

Hi,

I would like to do  following:

I have a table with frozen products (~400). 40 of these I have in a special freezer. In the freezer each of these 40 have a specific box which has a box number. I have one large table with all the detailed info about each of the ~400 product (called main layout). Then I have created one table with only the product ID# and the location in the freezer (freezer layout).

What I would like is a portal in the main layout that shows all the records from the freezer layout (ordered acording to a sorting number). So that I can see what is in all boxes in the freezer at the same time while I still can see the detailed record info on the main layout for one record. Is this possible??

Thanks,

Anna

Create a relationship between the two. Use the 'X' cartesian operator instead of the '='. This will allow all records from the parent side to related to all records on the child side. Now in your portal, you can have it sorted the way that you want.

Perfect! That solved that problem. A follow up question:

I just want to show two small fields but there are 40 of them. So Is there a way that I can make columns in the portal. So that I do not need to use a scroll bar?

Thanks,
Anna

You see 40 because there are 40 records. What is the purpose of only wanting to display the two fields? How would you go to the next one?

If I am guessing here purely on speculation,  you can use a bunch of 1 line portals ( each starting from a different row ) to display the relate records side by side. FileMaker does not have horizontal portals.

How do a make the portal starting from a specific row? Like the first portal shows the first 12 rows, the next portal the next 12 rows...etc.

I have figured it out!

Another question: how do I move a portal that I have create in a layout? And how do I change its size?

thanks,

Under the portal options in layout mode, towards the bottom, there is an Initial row field. Change the second set to start at 13.

We crossed posts...

Anyway, you can just select all the portal items including the fields in it and then move them together. You can even group those items together if you wish.

You can change the size of the portal by dragging or using the Object Info Pallette, where you can specify more precisely.

You can control the number of rows unde portal settings.
