Splitting up a Table with a large number of fields into multiple Tables with fewer fields

I have 2 Tables, Table_A and Table_B, in ONE large database with roughly 500 fields each.  Each Table controls it's own set of records.  It would be nice if I could break the large tables up into smaller tables (and still have it work).  Sort of like having many manageable subroutines in a large computer program.

I just tried to add Table_C with just the (17) date fields and relate it to the Table_A and Table_B.  Steps I took.

           • I added Table_C

           • I copied the date fields from Table_A into Table_C and deleted the date fields from Table_A.

           • I notice Table_C has no records.

This doesn't look like it's going to work.

Is it even possible to have multiple Tables controlling one set of records?
