sounds like the report was set up based on a sort order. When you first did it you were using the proper sort order and everything looked right. When you closed and reopened it that sort order was cleared out and not the report is just a list. I bet if you do the same sort you did originally, it will fix it.
That fixed it, do you know if there is a way to do this without having to sort every time I go back into it?
My first thought would be to have a one line script that performs the sort. Then in the layout setup, set a script trigger On Layout Enter to run the sort script.
There may be a better way, but that should work/
