How does this connect with your drop down menu?
Is this a report you want to pull up or something else?
Yes, I want to create a report that will summarize the number of jobs we did per department.
Ok, this is pretty simple to do with a bit of a "sneaky trick" here.
Create a layout based on this table set up for list view.
Delete the body layout part.
Add a sub summary part "when sorted by" your department field.
Define a summary field as the "count of" your department field or any other never empty field.
Put this summary field and your Department field in the sub summary part.
Enter browse mode
Perform a find, if needed, to pull up the records you want for this report. (this has to be done by script, or manually performed on a different layout based on the same table occurrence as your report layout.)
Sort your records by the department field. (This last step is needed before your report will be visible)
okay, that worked great, except that when it generates the report, instead of listing the specific department names, it repeats "Department Count" for each category, with the number beside it. Is there a way to ask it to list the names of the departments?
If you have a field that names each department, add it to the sub summary layout part. This can even come from a related table. You can also modify your sub summary part to specify sorting by this name field instead of the number if you want.
Good job. That did the trick! thanks so much.
