It works, but many new users encounter trouble with it after importing contacts from a external source. Unless you enable auto-enter options during import, the imported contacts do not get the required serial ID number and then "add a note" fails to work.
This can happen with a number of different starter solutions. The field names may differ but the ways to fix it are the same.
See this thread for details: Help importing Excel data into a Filemaker Starter solution
Thank you very much for your reply Phil. You're right, I was experiencing problems with the 'add note' button not working after importing records from an excel sheet.
I followed the link you posted and have gone back into the starter solution (Filemaker Pro 11) to rectify the problem but so far have had no luck. You mentioned the Contact ID field was the cause of the problem. When in layout mode, there's no Contact ID field on the main contact management layout. The only fields I've found that resemble this are named "kf_ID_Contact" and 'k_ID_Record' and these are under the 'Notes Utility' layout. Should I create a new Contact ID field on the main contact layout?
You also mentioned that the enable auto-enter function must be enabled when importing records. How do i enable this function? Please excuse my ignorance, i'm still learning certain aspects of FM.
Am I right in thinking that I will also need to do something similar for the 'related contacts' tab to work for imported records too? I think with a little more direction, I will be able to fix this and your continued support would be greatly appreciated.
The field you want is K_ID_Contact. You can use replace field contacts to add serial numbers in this field on any layout EXCEPT the layout named "notes Utility". You can use the field tool to add this field to a layout if you can't find it on an existing layout.
When you import records, there's a small dialog that appears just before you start the actual import. It has a check box to click to enable auto-enter options during import.
Thanks for ending my frustration Phil, you're a legend! After some 'tweaking' the fields are now performing as they should! Phew!
