this file is not modifiable
can anyone tell me what triggers this message (v10)on windows
simple guess ... try to give the file complete access to everybody (right mouseklick, properties, security)
or ... write protected
or ... the file is a email attachment and not yet saved to disk
or ... is on a cd or dvd
or ... no more guesses at this time

Files copied from CDs will often have the archive flag set.
Check properties of the file.
@david: not the archive flag, the write protect. something i have been tricked by too often ... shhhhhit why is this file not writable ;-) and some days later again .... shhhhhit why is this file not writable ... same procedure as every year.
and showing my ignorance
i've checked user permissions all seems normal
full access users still have full access
but even more confused
bit more history
this applies to a whole bunch of files which have been running for 12 months as a solution
files stored on a server
opened on one computer then used by three or more users opening the files remotely
the "host" shutdown - the usual pop up appeared to request the other loged on users to shut down
on restart - all files not modifiable
this happens when you open any of the files with with any of the computers even thoes not connected at the time
and now comes the really odd bit
one allows you to open the files as normal
and will host the other users as normal
i have just coppied the files from the server to one of the computers and opened them directly
and they work
