Transferring database to external hard drive

I work at an office which uses FileMaker Pro. The program and multiple databases are on a server accessed by the entire staff. I will be away from the office and will not have access to the server and want to edit the database while I am away. Can I transfer the specific database I need to an external hard drive and work on it remotely (I have the FileMaker program on my laptop) and when finished transfer it back to the main server for all to access? Is there anything in particular that I should be aware of before doing this? New to FileMaker.
