Is there a way to make text transparent? That's really what I'm after here.
Text can not be made transparent, unless it is changed to a vector graphic in a program such as Illustrator.
Text can be made the same color as the field that contains it, or the layout background.
Text can be made tiny, so it barely shows.
Text can be made huge, so that it will not likely show in a field.

David's tips are better, but for the record, if you're just looking for a check mark to show in a checkbox set, I discovered if I place some leading spaces before a custom value list value, I'm able to size down the field so no text shows (I could do that without the leading spaces, but not without making the checkbox set too narrow).
