And where/how exactly does this fail for you?
For a pie chart, You'd need at least enough data for two "wedges" of your pie chart even if the second "wedge" is simply the part of the wedge representing "everything else". For a single record, you need return delimited data for both your wedge data and your wedge labels.
Keep in mind that pie charts graph each wedge as "part of the whole" so you need some kind of value representing the entire "pie" that makes up your chart.
How do I return delimited data?
I have 3 calculation fields that compute the percentage of checkboxes selected. They add up to 100%

You can use the percentages or simplify the math to just return the counts. The chart object will turn the counts into percentages for you.
If your three fields were named field1, field2, field3, then this calculaition would put them in a return delimited list:
List ( YourTable::field1 ; YourTable::field2 ; YourTable::Field3 )
