For starters, read this knowlege base article:
Given the extreme number of changes between then and now, you may find it best to export all the data from your file into a tab file, then import the data into a new FileMaker 11 file.
Thank you very much for the answer. Unfortunately, I was not familiar with the old program when I was hired many years ago and basically taught myself enough to input data and create reports and lists. As a result this new version (12) appears to be completely different than the old one, so it appears I may have to completely learn this new program before I can even think of transferring. I do have an "easy transfer" program with my new computer but the files are still not converting to a format that I can work with. I may have to hire someone!!
Download and install the FMP ver 6 trial from one of the links in the page listed above.
Duplicate the database.
Drag and drop (or Open) the FMP ver 2 (FM2) database copy to the ver 6 trial, it will convert to ver 6 (FM3) file type
Drag and drop (or Open) the FMP ver 6 (FM3) onto FMP ver 11, it will convert to Filemaker Pro ver 11 (FM7) file type.
