Using symbols for in-field finds


I'm trying to do something that seems very simple: perform a find in a text field for records that contain a number, a dash, followed by a letter.  E.g. 1-A, or 9-C.  I'm using a find request of "#-@", which should mean 'one digit, then a dash, then a single character'.  But it doesn't work.  However, if the field contains a number, then a dash, then another number, that does work.  What gives?
