Are you wanting a list that will display both parent and child categories at the same time or just child category for a given parent?
I have an external data source that I want to use the values from so that the category_id in the filemaker database = the category_id in the external data source.
Therefore, I want to be able to in the products layout select the category in a portal creating records in cat_prod but using values from category_id in the category table which is in the external data source.
I want to be able to select the category in a drop down then the sub category in the next drop down and so on.... where the cat_id in the prod_cat_id = the cat_id from the category table
I think i want something similar to http://fm.lithium.com/fm/board/message?board.id=FM-en-4&thread.id=16077&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
I understand. The information I give here is for a one level category/sub-category functionality.
1. Make a relationship between your products and category table based on the parent category ID.
2. In the products table, place a parent category ID field. Make the field control a control using a value list that stores the parent category ID yet displays the parent category name.
3. Create a child category value list that store either the category name or ID (whatever you want) and displays the name if you chose ID. Select "Only include related values starting from:" and select the parent category table occurence.
4. In the products table, place a child category ID field. Make the field control a control using the child category value list.
