It is true that that "is how the program is designed" when working with drop-down lists. The behaviour you are looking for only works for pop-up menus. And you probably know there are some interface issues with one versus the other. the major one for me is what happens (or doesn't happen) when you tab to the field.
Anyway, as a workaround, you can do this:
1. create two copies of the field on the layout
2. format copy 1 to be a drop-down list and add it to the tab order on the layout
3. format copy 2 to be a pop-up menu that will not allow entry in Browse mode (Format > Field Control > Behaviour). Also format the field border line thickness to none and the fill to white.
4. position copy 2 on top of copy 1
Now you get the advantage of a drop-down list with the display of a pop-up menu.
As I say, it is a workaround. Submit a feature request now. ;)
I have imported a list of companies that i can access with "search". I would also like to have a drop down list. I have created the drop down list, but need to know how to import my list to the drop down list. It allows me to add and edit one name at a time. What are the steps to import the whole list?
