I never even noticed the absence, but that's because I got the FMP 10 advanced version. With it you can weed out unused fields by reviewing the relevant portions of the database design report you can create with the advanced version.

You might look at the BaseElements software that will create an index of all fields and the layouts where they appear. It's something like $499 plus it requires FileMaker Pro Advanced.

If you're going to get FMP advanced anyway, I'd check out the straight Database Design report from FMP advanced first. It may provide all you need for this (it does for me) and if so, you won't need to shell out the additional $$$ for base elements.
