What steps do you take when redesigning a database interface?
I am a Filemaker 8 user and have been tasked to improve the layout design of a robust relational database (13k records & 100+ fields). Although I have built very simple FM databases, I am not sure where to start when redesigning a existing layout.
Basically, the database owner wants to be able to enter a complicated specific query and the database generates an output that answers the query.
I want to know what are the best practices or steps that will help me plan an user friendly interface that takes the input and generates a report with the information the user is seeking. I've been browsing database and FileMaker books on Safari Online for ideas, but not finding a series of steps to take.
I understand use cases - is this something that a database designer uses also for redesigning an interface? What do you do under these circumstances? I will appreciate all input, including pointers to relevant online resources and terminology to focus on.
