Why are my Interactive containers are not interactive?

      Post

Mac OS 10.8.2, and Filemaker 12.

Why do the files in the interactive containers fail to function as interactive files?

The pdf shows up as a balck rectangle. The jpg shows up as a thumbnail. Neither of them are function as interactive files. My prefrence is to have a thumbnail that will launch  the file into a separate floating window.  I've seen this done in a video, but for some reason I cannot peice it together.

As far as I have been able to determine, you cannot double click an interactive container field to open the file.

To get interactive behavior for a PDF file, you must select the interactive optimization option on the inspector's data tab and then must use insert PDF to insert the file.

My experiments appear to indicate that you can open a file by double clicking only if:

Insert File was used to insert the file.

"Store a reference" was selected for the insert.

And interactive optimization is not selected for the file.
