      Title

[FM10] Printing / Printer Driver Issues - MAC and WIN

      Post

Two clients have been upgraded to FM10 -- one MAC, one WIN.

      Client #1 -- MAC ONLY.

User is on OSX 10.5.6 attempting to print to a USB Epson 1280 printer with driver 3.09 -- FAILS.  Three printer drivers to choose from in her printer dialog (Epson 1280, Epson 1280 and Espson 1280-1).  The first two error out immediately.  The last appears to go to a printer but neither prints nor errors out.

All other programs print normally to this printer.

This printer worked normally on FM9 last week before the upgrade.

Another upgraded user on the same network, with the same OS, printer, and print driver, printing the same record, has no problem.

I sounds/looks/feels like a driver issue for this user.

      What is the likely cause?
      What is a likely solution?

      ---

Client #2 -- MAC AND WIN:

User on OSX 10.X.X (TBD) and Windows XP (version TBD) on Parallels.  The databse prints gibberish (overlapping text and wrong characters) on both platforms.  FM9 on MAC and WIN used to print fine from this user prior to the upgrade last week.

Other upgraded users on the network can print just fine.

This also appears to be a driver issue ... but on two platforms at the same time ... on one user only.  Wierd.

      What is the likely cause?
      What is a likely solution?

      ---

      Thanks in advance.

          Thank you for your post.

If printing works on one computer and not another, you will need to find out what are the differences between the two systems.  If you believe it is a printer driver issue, copy the printer driver from the working computer and install it on the not working computer.  Also, pull down the File menu and select "Page Setup...".  Make sure everything looks find and click OK.  Then, go to Print and click Preview.  Make sure this looks correct before printing.  Then try printing again.

If you still have a problem, you may have a corrupt system font (or fonts).  This may also be a cause for your second problem.  Either a corrupt font, or a specific font isn't present, so it tries to substitute.

            Thanks for the quick reply.

Correction on the second case.  Its Windows only, one layout only.

            I'll check what you've suggested.

            Relate:

WHY have these symptoms only appeared after FM10 was installed.  Is FM10 more particular about printer drivers and fonts than FM9?

Is this a warning/note that should be included in FM10 install instructions?

            Thanks.

I don't know why these symptoms only appeared after FileMaker Pro 10 was installed.  Several people in Technical Support shrug their shoulders.  No new printer problems for FileMaker Pro 10 have been reported, so it may just be coincidence on this one machine.  Sorry I can't be more definitive.
