Thank you for your post.
If each of your print scripts are set for printers you no longer have, there is no way to update them all at one time. You need to go into each script and change it.
In the future, you may want to consider having a separate script for printing called "PRINT". Then, in your other scripts, when you want to print, perform the "PRINT" script. That way, if the printer ever changes, you only have to update it in one place.
This issue is, I believe, a major issue with FM and print scripting. I've been working on a solution and I believe I have one. I'll post it in a few days after it's been tested. The printer selection should never have to be "hard-coded" into a script.
Thank you TSGal, that sounds like a good idea. I'm also holding my breath for the results of Rick's experiments.
Thanks to you both!
This is just another one of those issues that seems beyond FMI.
The number of times they have changed the behaviour of the Print Setup & Print Scripts between versions is worthless.
All they need to do is add a Set PrinterByName step and a Get(InstalledPrinters) function.
Ive posted about the printing hardships on techtalk about 2 or so years ago and also immediatly after 10's release.
As it stands, even with the few "improvements" in 10 for printing, its still impossible to relase a vertical market solution without printing hassles.
Scripted or Not.
I gave up on this one being fixed and purchased myfmbutlers plugin, never to look back.. thats a costly option (depending on licence) but it works.
I've posted my idea of a solution to this problem on the "Using Filemaker Pro" section.
Whew! Looks like quite a slog! Thank you. I'll try it sometime when I have a day to kill. Might this be something FM could fix for us? I'm especially nervous about a fix like you suggest because after investing all that time, I'd be afraid a new OS version might mess it up again.
Anyway. THANK YOU!
Thank you for your comments.
SW - I encourage you to enter the "Set PrinterByName" and "Get(InstalledPrinter) " script steps iinto our Feature Request web form at:
