    jdevans

      Summary

      Admin-console access via browser/workstation

      Product

      FileMaker Server

      Version

      13

      Operating system version

      Windows Server 2008 R2, Win 7 workstation

      Description of the issue

Can't seem to find the combination of settings that will allow the Admin-Console login screen to display from a remote workstation. Filemaker Support won't provide guidance. The documentation that I have found thus far is no help. Can anyone here provide some help?

      Steps to reproduce the problem

go to remote workstation, launch browser, type in http://IPAddress:16000

      OR https://IPAddress:16000

      Expected result

Login page of FM13 Server Admin-Console

      Actual result

The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.

Exact text of any error message(s) that appear

The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.

               Dale Evans:

               Thank you for your post.

               Try using:

               https://<IP Address>:16000/admin-console

If you still get the same error, see if there is any firewall set on the host computer.  If so, make sure you have all the necessary ports open on the server.  For more information about necessary ports, see Knowledge Base Articles #13297 and #12120:

Continue to keep me updated with any progress.

I tried that, and got a warning from Chrome.  I clicked "Proceed Anyway." and got:

The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.

Why is the documentation so spotty on Server 2008 R2 Configuration? It is basically, "figure it out yourself." :\

                     Dale Evans:

Are you able to launch a browser on the server and run:

                     http://localhost:16000

This will let me know if it is a FileMaker Server issue or a remote issue.

I'm a little confused about "the documentation so spotty on Server 2008 R2 Configuration.".  That documentation is usually provided by Microsoft.  However, since you mentioned it in this forum, what exactly are you looking for in relation to FileMaker Server?

On the server, when using the address you mentioned "http://localhost:16000" I get "Page can't be displayed." But when changing it to 16001, I get to the login screen. Again, this is on the server itself.

What I meant about the server documentation is this...Server settings (in Server 2008 R2) to ensure connectivity with FMS13 should be more thoroughly documented, in my opinion. All it says is "make sure the following ports are open or available...." That's about it. If there is any trouble, like I'm experiencing, there is nothing. No troubleshooting lists. Microsoft documentation sure isn't going to say anything about FIleMaker in its documentation, since it is just a vehicle. I would expect that Filemaker's documentation would be a lot more thorough with screen shots, etc based on whether you're installing on OSx or MS Server, etc.

                       Maybe I expect too much.

                         Dave Evans:

My apologies for the port.  It should have been 16001 (as stated in the Getting Started Guide).

What additional screen shots would you like to see?  Only for troubleshooting section (chapter 4 of Getting Started Guide - Testing your deployment)?  Let me know, and I'll make sure the information is forwarded to the appropriate departments.

OK, for example in Chapter 4 of Getting Started guide, the first thing is says is to

"Start Admin Console. Choose Server menu> Open Test Page."

Where? On my local machine, or on the Server? I tried it on my server, since I am unable to connect to Admin Console on my local machine, and I get a result not covered here. I got:

"There is a problem with this website's security certificate."

Then, the next item is "Open the Test page by typing the following in a web browser:

                           https://[host]:16000/test

where [host] is the IP address or host name of the master machine."

Again, Where? Do I do this on my local machine, or over on the server? At this point I have only one choice.

I still haven't had any luck getting someone to help me address the remote connectivity issue I seem to be having. Is there anyone who would be willing to help? I have been digging around on this for a week with no luck. Why would I continue with a product which has such a shallow support for getting up and running?

                             Dave Evans:

It shouldn't matter where you start Admin Console.

Since you are still having difficulty connecting remotely, it's probably better you talk directly to a Technical Support specialist, as she/he can walk through an entire checklist of things, and depending on your answers, then determine the next course of action.  They will also be able to determine if the ecurity certificate is valid and supported.  In North America, call toll-free 800-325-2747.  Outside of North America, contact the FileMaker office nearest you.

I already contacted them. That's why I came here looking for answers. They spent like two minutes going thru the shortest checklist I could imagine. Then they shoe-ed me off to fix-it-yourself land.

                               This is really discouraging.

I really thought I'd get better support by calling in. No luck.

If Admin Console isn't launching, you should be given a number of options.  Check your Inbox at the top of this page for additional information.
