An application hang occured on shutdown

    SteveWyndham

      Summary

An application hang occured on shutdown & Database is now corrupted.

      Product

      FileMaker Pro

      Version

      11.0.3.312

      Operating system version

      Windows XP SP3

      Description of the issue

The fileMaker Pro app resides on a PC, but the database resides on a file server. When the App was being shut down at the end of the day it became hung, but there was no notification at the time. The next morning the user reported that when the database was opened, there was a database corruption message.

Upon investigation, the following Event Viewer entry was recorded: Hanging application FileMaker Pro.exe, version 11.0.3.312, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0 hang address 0x00000000

Exact text of any error message(s) that appear

"Database name.fp7" is damaged and cannot be opened. Use the Recover command to recover this file.

      Workaround

I was able to use the Recover command to recover the file. A similar issue occurred with our previous version, but the recovery was not completely successful.

What is unknown here is if the "hang" corrrupted the file or if the file was already corrupted and then this corruption was also responsible for the "hang".

Things to keep in mind about Recover:

          1. Recover does not detect all problems
          2. Recover doesn't always fix all problems correctly
          3. Best Practice is to never put a recovered copy back into regular use or development. Instead, replace the damaged file with an undamaged back up copy if this is at all possible. You may have to save a clone of the back up copy and import all data from your recovered copy to get a working copy with the most up to date information possible.
