Auto-Entering of data in new records fails for grandchildren

      Summary

Auto-Entering of data in new records fails for grandchildren

      Description of the issue

      1. Set up a portal to a related table that is two hops away - ie a grandchild table rather than a child table. 2. Enable creation of related records in the relationship diagram at both steps. 3. Using a portal, create new records in the grandchild table. 4. Fields in the grandchild table that are set to auto-populate with a calculation drawing on the grandparent table will remain empty.

In my experience it has always been undependable to autoenter by calc through a relationship, even one generation away. try putting the values into globals and autoenter by calc = global

Well that's depressing, since this is in principle a useful aspects of the Auto Enter feature. Can the Filemaker tech support team comment on this problem, which must be a very widespread problem if your comment is correct?

              Thank you for your post.

This is a limitation of our current form-based submission model.  The problem is that the field is set for modifiable, and its value is updated when the form submission occurs.  If you mark the field to be non-modifiable during data entry, then it gets updated correctly.  Another workaround (although I've had difficulty with this one) is to place the auto-enter field at the back of the stacking order.  When form submission occurs, the fields are updated from back to front.  Only fields where the submitted value is different from the existing value are changed.

The workaround by "gaBby" also works (Thank you!).
