If you change the layout field to a button, the field object name is removed so you can assign a different name to the button. When you change the button back to "Do Nothing", the original field object name is displayed again.
I believe this behavior is true of any group of objects (Turning an object into a button makes it a "group"). You can only access the group's name not the name of any object within the group.

Perhaps we can clarify this slightly. One can not edit the name of the enclosed object without ungrouping it first. This statement may be misunderstsood as that one can not access an enclosed object which is not true.
