Can't fire up .docx or .pdf viewers in Container

    DonaldMacfarlane

      Summary

Can't fire up .docx or .pdf viewers in Container

      Product

      FileMaker Pro

      Version

      12

      Operating system version

      Windows 7 Enterprise

      Description of the issue

I need to store word processing documents in container field. In FM11, clicking on the thumbnail icon in a container would put up a scrollable window showing complete Word documents.

In FM12, clicking on the thumbnail view sometimes opens a MS Word window with a navigator side bar, but no window showing the text. Othertimes, nothing happens on clicking.

Question -- how best to store and display word processor output?

      Steps to reproduce the problem

Drag a MS Word of PDF document into a  container window. Click on the resulting icon or thumbnail

      Expected result

Document should open in a readable form in relevant viewer

      Actual result

Clicking PDF does nothing. Clicking MS Word docx or doc icon does nothing. Clicking on thumbnail of a Word document either initiates a Word window without the text box, or does nothing

Exact text of any error message(s) that appear

      None

      Configuration information

I am using Word 2010,Windows 7 Enterprise with Google cloud connect. Adobe 9 installed

      Workaround

      Go back to FM11?

In FileMaker 11 in Windows, drag and drop was the equivalent of Insert Object--something not supported in FileMaker 12. They did add drag and drop to container fields as a new feature though so you can still drag and drop, but this no longer inserts an object (OLE), it performs an Insert File option and inserts a physical copy of the file into the container field.

To open such a file, you have to use export field contents to export the field back out of the database. This can be scripted so that clicking the field performs this action.
