Conditional formatting a field based upon change of data

      Summary

Conditional formatting a field based upon change of data

      Product

      FileMaker Pro

      Version

      9.0v3

      Operating system version

      OS X 10.6.8

      Description of the issue

I want to conditionally format a field so that either the text or the field changes color when there is a change in the copy that is in the field. Any way to do this?

E.G., the field has "Pied Piper sleeps a lot" as entered text. Someone changes the text to read "Pied Piper sleeps much of the time." Is there a way to make either the text color or field color change when the change is made?

Report An Issue is intended for Reporting Possible Software bugs. Questions on how to work with FileMaker Pro should be posted in the FM Pro Forum Section. (See tab at top of this screen.)

And then what happens once you get that color change? Will there be some review or approval process that then resets the conditional formatting so that the next change in data can be flagged with such a color change?

You can use script triggers to capture the fact that the field was modified. Then the script can set a different field with a value that flags the field as changed and your conditional format can then specify a color change if the value in that field is not empty.

OnObjectEnter can trip a script that saves the current value of the field to a global variable. OnObjectSave can trip a script that compares the current value of the field to the value in the variable and then flag the field as changed if the values are not equial. (This method distinguishes between cases where the user edits the field but then changes their mind and re-edits it back to the original value before exiting the field.)

If the field is formatted with a drop down list or pop up menu, the original value of the field should be passed to the script as a script parameter to capture the value before the user selects a different value from the value list.

Thanks for this. Sorry about the mis-posting--I thought all of the postings pertained to the forum, since that's what I signed into.

You apparently missed this text in the issue report form:

If you have a question about how to use a FileMaker product, please post that question to one of the other forums (FileMaker Forum, FileMaker Server Forum or FileMaker Go Forum) that have been set up for that purpose.
