Yes, it's a workaround, but this was a bug report. :)
I meant for the .xls option only, which was the specific bug reported. :)

When you use the "File>>Save/Send Records As ... " you are attempting to export those records to a file type of an older version of excel, which is no longer supported in OSX Lion.
This issue has been documented in the Knowledge Base Article #9901, which you can find at:
".xls" is still the defacto standard for Excel and just about every (other) program everywhere uses it fine.
OpenOffice, Pages, ...., you name it all work fine with Excel's .xls format (importing & exporting).
If an option doesn't work on Lion, you shouldn't be able to even get to it via the FileMaker menu -- then only to have an "error" dialog. Not a good UI design.
There are other libraries/ways for your developers to maintain compatability with .xls files outside of Rosetta.
