That's not the normal behavior. You might check the external sources - or maybe something is corrupt. Was the DB created with FileMaker 12 - or earlier?
The files were created in Filemaker 9. It surprises me since the file that "cannot be found" is the file I am using! We just updated to Filemaker 12 a couple weeks ago and this is the only gliche I've found so far. As long as the file is open, it doesn't ask again. But even closing the DB without quitting Filemaker causes the "link" to itself to be broken.
I'm not sure what you mean by "external sources".
Take a look at Manage | External Data Sources and examine the entrees there for issues.
Thank you, I do NOT see the name of the file listed as an external data source.
Should I add the name of the database as an external data source? This seems counter intuitive, seeing as the file is not "external".
The second database(called Sales By Item) IS listed as an external data source, as are several other DB's that do not seem to create this issue.
The source is listed in this format - "file:Sales By Item", as are the other DB's that do not cause the beach ball.
What would indicated an "issue"? All the entries look the same.
check it out first with Your FM9 Version. How are the external data sources defined?
- with the IP or just with file:?
just with file: I believe as long as the DB was in the same folder, there was no issue finding the file.
the files are _no longer_ in the same folder? What happens, if You move all the files into the same folder? ...
The files are in the same folder, no changes were made to the folder structure during the upgrade to FM 12.
Just an idea : it could be related to the new File Access tab on Manage > Security ?
That means the problem could be an authorization problem instead of a path problem...
Greg : you can check this panel form the linked file...
PS: Pure spectulation.
Something does not make sense to me here. These quoted statements are contradictory:
I believe as long as the DB was in the same folder, there was no issue finding the file.
I do NOT see the name of the file listed as an external data source.
This seems counter intuitive, seeing as the file is not "external".
If the data comes from a table in a different file than the current database file, then the file IS external and MUST have an external data source reference.
There are two files that cannot be located. Say DB #1 and DB#2.
DB#1 is the current database file and is not listed with an external data source.
DB#2 is an external file and is listed with an external data source reference.
I am given the dialog box that informs me the "database could be not be opened, either the host is not available or the file was not available on the host" for BOTH files: DB#1(current) and DB#2(external)
I had asked if I should add DB#1 as an external data source, which didn't make sense since it is the current file.
I hope this clears up the confusion. I appreciate any help you can give.
Regarding the new File Access tab on Manage> Security, there is NOTHING listed in either of the 2 files causing trouble.
Gentleman ALL, thank you for your help. The problem was found in the external data sources of the linked files, NOT in the current file.
There were links to the old server IP address in several linked DBs and when changed ALL the external data sources in ALL the files to the file: format, Hallelujah! I re-started Filemaker and right-clicked my related table and "NO BEACH BALL".
Thanks again, I now know what an "issue" looks like in an external data source.
