      Summary

FileMaker Script Steps that Should be Web Compatible

      Product

      FileMaker Server

      Version

      FMSA11

      Operating system version

      Windows Server SBS 2008

      Description of the issue

      Dear FM Developers,

Does anybody else find the large number of non compatible script steps for web publishing, Server and FM Go to be quite frustrating, especially when so many other websites can do many of those tasks?

I find myself wasting lots of time with web developments or workarounds due to incompatible script steps that really should be compatible or at least partially compatible on web publishing and custom web publishing and others on Server. I wish FileMaker would put a lot more effort into compatibility since it could really save developers a lot of time and frustration.

      For example:

      Instant Web Publishing

I believe the following FileMaker Pro instant Web publishing not compatible script steps could be made web compatible or at least partially compatible.

Import records and export records should be able to work exactly the same way that import records and export records does with the server schedules.

Import xml via http request should definitely be compatible.

Show custom dialog should be partially compatible in that it should be web translated as a JavaScript input box that can take at least one value and be inserted into the database.

Insert Picture, File, Object, QuickTime - Numerous websites support uploading or inserting pictures or files - why is this step incompatible?

Save as PDF script step should be web compatible as other websites can generate PDFs. Many people always says it is a licensing issue. As for licensing why don't they just give us a set number of PDFs that were able to make with the existing license per time frame and then sell additional PDF printout licenses if more are needed?

Export Field Contents - If Export Records can work from the server under the appropriate conditions, why not Export Field Contents?

Save Records As Excel - Numerous websites can export data as Excel

Print Setup and Print Should bring up the browsers print and print setup dialogs

Beep - Browsers are capable of playing sound - why is this incompatible?

Execute SQL and Send Event - These should be able to run on the server under the same criteria as import and export record scripts do.

      Server -

Pause/Resume Script should be partially compatible in that it could work when the pause is set for an amount of time but not work when set indefinitely.

Import from a folder should work the same way that import records works currently

Export Field Contents - If Export Records can work from the server under the appropriate conditions, why not Export Field Contents?

Save Records As Excel - If Export Records can work from the server under the appropriate conditions, why not Save Records As Excel?

Execute SQL and Send Event - These should be able to run on the server under the same criteria as import and export record scripts do.

      FM Go -

Save As PDF and Export Records - FMTouch is able to Save as PDF and export records as CSV, why not FM Go?

Import Records from Http Request - Why is this not partially compatible. The iphone can grab and retrieve stuff on the web and this step does not require a hard drive, so why is it incompatible?

Why do charts not work? Multiple iphone apps display charts

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else wishes more compatible script steps and if so, would you please request these features here:

      http://www.filemaker.com/company/contact/feature_request.html

      Thanks in advance!
      Shawn

      Steps to reproduce the problem

Try to run a database on web publishing or fm go and you will find a lot of scripts that should partially work that don't.

      Expected result

Enable more of the script steps as listed above to work on instant web publishing and custom web publishing so that our solutions work more seemlessly together.
