FMP12 Crashes when saving large PDFs

Question asked by ronhofius on Oct 1, 2012

Summary

FMP12 Crashes when saving large PDFs

Product

FileMaker Pro

Version

12 and 12 advanced

Operating system version

Windows 7 and Windows XP

Description of the issue

We produce a large book of New Mexico livestock brand owners from our Filemaker database. There are forty records per page, two columns of twenty records each. Each record contains two container fields with references to externally stored small line art images along with a few text fields. The book is about 800 pages long, so we print it in PDFs of 100 pages each. Since the upgrade to FM12, whenever we try to create a 100 page PDF, Filemaker crashes hard. As a work-around, we print it in lots of 25 pages, and sometimes that crashes as well.

Steps to reproduce the problem

Try to print more than about 25 pages of our brand book to a PDF.

Expected result

A PDF file created in a specified location

Actual result

Filemaker crashes, producing no PDF

Exact text of any error message(s) that appear

Windows' native message when a program crashes. Win7 example: "FileMaker Pro Advanced has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Workaround

Print fewer pages at a time until we find the number that won't crash, then use Adobe Acrobat to combine them into a single PDF.
