      Summary

FMSA 11 implimentation on Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit - Memory problem

      Product

      FileMaker Server

      Version

      FileMaker Server Advanced 11.0.2.217

      Operating system version

      Microsoft© Windows Server© 2008 Standard Version: 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002 - 64 bit version

      Description of the issue

      Hi,

We notice the following problem/issue with an FMSA 11.0.2.217 implimentation on our dedicated MS Windows Server 2008 Standard edition.
When starting up the FMSA and hosting the FM files (35), the performance monitor of windows shows that about 1.1 Gbyte of the 8 Gb RAM is used.
As users log on to the database, the amount of RAM being used raises gradually.

But what we notice is, that
      a) Even when most of the users log out from their connection with the FMSA server, the amount of RAM used never descends anymore;
      b) When the backup schedule start, this completely fills the memory, and keeps it that way. And often the FMSA Administration Console no longer refreshes afterwards, and needs to be restarted (The backup schedules run daily)

After some days, the system starts to loose performance, obliging us to try to clear and release memory.

The only way to have the memory cleared, and released, is closing all hosted files and reopen them.

We did already do several maintenance on the database files.

      Steps to reproduce the problem

Verify the memory usage on the Performance  Monitor of Microsoft Windows

      Expected result

The memory use would be cleared when users logout, or when the backup schedule finishes

      Actual result

Memory usage stays at the same level, and continues raising until all is used, and perfoirmance deteriorates.

      Configuration information

      Connections (Averages - Peak)
           Type              | Average | Peak
           CWP               |     1   |   3
           FileMaker Pro     |    51   |  69

      Workaround

The only way to have the memory cleared, and released, is closing all hosted files and reopen them.

Thank you for your post, and I apologize for the late reply.

The first thing I notice is that your largest database is almost 3 Terabytes.  Is that correct?

What is the total size of all database files?

Are all database files being backed up at once?  Or, are they being backed up on a rotating basis at specified intervals?

            Hi TSGal,

            Thanks for your answer.

No the largest filesize is about 3 Gigabytes. This is the file containing incoming data from our Automatic Email and Document Processing Module. Please note that in that file we don't use FileMaker Container fields to store documents, but an external storage solution using a FileMaker plugin.

We did develop due to this issue a monitoring module in FileMaker so that we centralize all Server information, together with usage of the databases, so that we could interpolate events in time with the different server loads.

I included some screenshots of that module for more detail on what we found.

            a) The Server load seems to be created by the server in the daily use, but what we notice is that FM Server Advanced uses the Physical Memory to its complete extend, but doesn't start to use the Virtual pages memory of the server. So the server load of memory is not an issue that ought to be alarming. We did include in our Monitoring Module an alarm setting that in the moment the Virtual pages memory is used, the system needs to warn us of possible problems;

            b) The moment the backup schedule starts in the FM Server, it seems that memory is released.

So probably the memory use is most likely caching memory created by the FM Server to handle the data requests.

Screen shot of the last 24 hour load on the dataserver

The red squar on the image shows the moment when the backup schedule is starting on the FileMaker Server.

The backup concerns 13 files at that moment.

So in fact it is not an issue for this moment, but something that needs to be closely followed that FileMaker Server on a Windows 2008 Standard server by default uses all memory, and clears it only at moments of backup.

The performance deterioration isn't from this issue, but as we noticed now in the Monitoring Module, an issue that raises on the Terminal Server which the people use to connect to the database, as they use FM 10 Pro, mixed with FM 9 Pro.

            With regards,

            Mike Ottevaere

Hi did you ever find a good solution for this?

                Hi there,

The monitoring runs now already for 2 months on the server systems, and in these 2 months we didn't notice at all any deterioration of performance of the FileMaker environment.

If you first look at it, it seems alarming, but in the end it just shows that the complete resources of the server are used.

                With regards,

                Mike Ottevaere.
